Got a big new tank, need some help

:help: I bought a brand new 150-gallon glass tank and I need some help. For the past two months now I've been debating on how I want to set up my tank, whether saltwater or freshwater. After doing lots of research, I've decided to live my dream of a big saltwater tank. Fortunately the only equipment I have so far is a Fluval FX-5 filter and some moonlights for the wood canopy I have over the tank. For now I'd like to start with a FOWLR. I like the fact that with saltwater, it seems like you can start out simple and then go up to a reef tank later down the road; I had been looking into freshwater planted tanks but with that you need to buy all your high-intensity lighting right away. Anyway, my question is this: can I use the Fluval FX5 filter with a FOWLR tank? Do I need a protein skimmer in addition to this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Most people say that you do need a protein skimmer... I have one.. once you see what the protein skimmer takes out of your tank you will be happy you have one.
you dont need it right away..you can let your tank cycle for about 4-8 weeks.
