Sounds like today is a great birthday day in your house!!!

Happy birthday to your son and congrats on the babies!! Can't wait to see pics

Well the Birthday boy has crashed!!!!! He almost didnt make it to the end of the party he was SO tired!!!!!
Today is a GREAY day for B-Days in our house, u r right!!!!!

if my camera didnt get left at my in-laws I will TRY to post pics tonight

PS: how r your horses doing???

Oh I am SOOOO sorry to hear that.

I have had a lot of losses too so I feel ya
I just discovered today that my filter is too powerful for the fry and it sucks them in and they fight until they are just worn out and I think this may have been the reason my fry have not done well.....I have had that filter off today and just running my sponge filter (I hope it works well enuf)
Tomorrow I am picking up a 'betta display" that attaches to the inside of the tank and then the fry will be protected (I HOPE)

That sounds like a great idea, hopefully it does work for you.
My husband hated the brine hatchery noise so getting more ponies is out of the question. I've been thinking about horses and have my eye on a tank at the LFS that would be great for them but I am still undecided. So for now I have my 55 and looking for a bigger one. I'm hoping to find a used one online if not I am going to go to Pittsburgh and get one new

I am interested in hearing how this works out for you. Are you thinking mainly to protect the fry from the filter system ?or also hoping to concentrate feeding? Let me know your results, please. BTW, you have dwarves, right? It's what I always think when I read 'ponies' but sometimes I'm wrong. Anyway, congrat's on the new arrivals!!

They do have some great nursery boxes, plastic boxes that hang on the tank rim...used for live bearers..
Also, you can wrap filter media to the filter intakes and secure. It slows down filtration somewhat, but can help. And if you have extension tubes to lengthen the intake tubes and lower the placement of the problem...

yes I have dwarves!!! They are awesome!!!!
I do have covers on my intakes, I even covered that with a stocking to prevent the babies fron getting caught in it but it is still strong
I have looked into the nersery boxes but the slits are big enuf for the fry to get out and the netted ones get alge covered and u cant see into them well IMO
I am getting the "betta display" as a way to keep better track of the fry and keep them away from the stronger filter......I will keep u all posted on how it works out

Do you ever share some of your little ones with newer hobbyists? Or can you recommend a place to buy CB dwarves? I'm looking to get started late this summer. Thx!!

Sadly I have lost my other fry
due to the strength of my filter I believe
Hence the reason I am getting the beta display to keep them safe......I havent been running my main filter since I was watching it capture my babies and not want to let them go so I have been just running my sponge filter until I get them gathered into the lil nursery container
If these and my "expectant fry" (lots of preggo males)
I will probably have some for sale in the late spring or early summer but we will have to see if I can master the art of raising these lil wonders!!!
I will def keep u posted on how they are doing!!!!
I can pm u the link to the site I ordered from....I have more arriving on Wed but I believe the places I buy only have WC ponies....I have NEVER seen any CB avail

'preciate any info you can give me.

I read that when you get new ponies you should give them a freshwater dip and then put them into a quarantine tank for a couple of days and then another freshwater dip before settling into your main tank. My question is whether this applies only to adding new livestock to an established community or if it applies even when you're just beginning. In other words, if you take dead sand and rock, fake plants, set up your tank. Add a tiny piece of cocktail shrimp and cycle, then maybe add a culture of pods.... IF, after all that you're ready to add ponies, do you need to QT them? Or just freshwater dip and then straight into the main tank? I'm trying to figure out how much I need to set up....Main tank, QT/hospital tank, brine hatchery/tank.....???
I'm keenly interested in hearing about the experiences of others so I can learn as much as possible before trying my hand. Thanks for letting us all know how this new tactic works with your latest fry!! I'll be waiting for progress reports!!

Ok so the betta display does NOT work...it jas slats in it that they can slip out of soooooo Im off to another LFS to get the net type as I dont have all the pieces to the one I had grrrrr

Unless of course anyone has any ideas of how to cover the slots safely
PLAN 2: setting up a 1g tank for the fry and dads to be........I am being selfish I DONT want anything distructing my view from them or the rest of the herd!!! LOL Not to mention I couldnt get all 3 kids to get ready so I gave up the idea of trying to leave the house
I'll keep u posted

I wonder if you superglue (cut to fit) some of the mesh type mateial over the slots on the box type....best of both worlds?

I set up a 2gal nursery tank for the fry and dads to be
I "think" I got everyone now.......I just fished 2 more fry outa the parents tank

I killed the batteries in my camera taking pictures of my Birthday boy!!!! i will be getting the rechargeable batteries today or tomorrow!!!!
Everyone made it thru the night in their new lil home and the official count is 13 fry from that batch!!!!

What about laying a piece of very fine gauge plastic needle point canvas in the bottom of the betta display? It's cheap, comes in different gauges, and is easy to cut to size.
If you try, please let me know how it works, because I plan to try something very similar myself someday.

BTW, 3 kids? congrat's; how old? Besides the 1-yr old, I mean!!
My 3 are 18 (today) 16 1/2, and 12. I miss the 1-yr old days.
TTYL!!

I gave up on the betta display so I guess I will be putting it in my FW tank for BETTAS!!!! LOL

The babies and dads to be are in a 2gal hex with a low flow filter.....so far so good! And breakfast this morning for them was great!! LOTS of bbs for them in a small area and I was able to make sure they were eating. Which was much harder to do when they were all over the 10g

BTW I did use needle point canvases to make the divider for my 75g

works great!
And my daughters are soon to be 10 & 7 (both in May) and my lil man just turned one on Sunday
