Gray sponge attack

Will get some pics later today...I have a gray sponge attacking my sand polyps. Leaving a black reisdue up the stems.
I'll admit I let this tank go for a couple of months...this is my fault and my responsibility to fix it.
Without pics any ideas? And what do I need to do to stop it? Pull that rock scrub it and do a ro/di dip?
Last params were good 8 days ago...cept the trates at 20 (they've almost always stayed in the 10-20 rng).
2yr old system.

Really sounds like black cyano, which is something I had invade my tank also.

All I did was less frequent feedings and lighting time and it went away eventually.
