gray stuff on sand

grouperhead

on my ls bed mixed w/ cc there is some grey dust looking stuff on it. im not sure what it is. i have a 75 gall w/ a trigger and grouper in it. it is not watse, it is much to small and fine to be that. could it maybe be a deadspot. i dont have a powerhead yet (saving up money to get a good one). from what i have read though deadspots are areas of uneaten food, but this doesnt look like uneat food. i clean up all uneaten food althou there is usually little. i feed silversides and frozen shrimp. any thoughts on what it is? my readings are ph8.2, amm-o, rite-0, rate-0, sg 1.023. any suggestions? later, bo

Detrius? Is it a little puffy, kind of looks like a dust bunny in your tank? Dead spots are areas in your tank where there is no current flow, which will lead to things accumilating in that spot, usually food and waste. I say get the powerheads which will keep this junk from settling to the bottom and it will be picked up by your filtration. Do you see that same matter in the pockets and crevices of your rock work?

Water flow will be the cure, I added a wave maker a month ago and no dead spots . but you dont nead this technical stuff to do a good job, small powerheads placed in the right spots and the job will be done , and when you do get one get them big enough to do the job, too big and they will do what you donot want, especially if you have live sand , your tank will be a snow storm with high out put pumps,,,cya :)
