Green algae has taken over

I know, you're not supposed to let it get out of control. I tried, but I failed miserably and now I don't know what to do. I have a 110 gal tank with about 60 lbs live rock, 3 clown fish, 1 damsel and a cleaner shrimp. I have an overflow box with sump, protein skimmer, two pumps to return water to tank and two power heads in the display tank. It's been set up since around Christmas time. About 2 months ago, I thought there was getting to be too much algae so I went to my LFS and he gave me a phoshpate sponge to use. He said to leave it in there for 2 weeks. Well that was a huge mistake. It probably tripled in those two weeks and since then it has just gotten worse. Any suggestions? I know everyone has to be new once, but it's so frustrating when you have no idea what to do next! Thanks in advance for your help!!
