Green Algae

I know this seems like an elementary question but what causes green algea on my glass and rocks? I have a 55 gal. I use RO water to fill. I have a Marineland Emperor 400 filter with biowheel, protein skimmer. My levels are checking ok. I have 3 little damsels and 1 clown. 8 hermits and a cleaner shrimp. Is it a build up of nutrients from over feeding maybe? What is the best way to remedy? Thanks

If it is a new tank it could just be part of a cycle. I had to scrape the glass 3 times a day with my magfloat when I started my 90 gallon. Also check your bulbs. If they are old they can lead to excessive algae growth.

Tank has been going for a little over a month. When all my levels finally dropped to zero. I started adding.

Add a phosphate pad to your filtration. You'll be amazed at the difference it makes.
What does a phosphate pad look like? I haven't been able to find one for my marineland emperor 400. Does it just slide in or do you use the slide in holder that came with the marineland filter?

Theres just a natural algae bloom that almost everyone gets at one point in the new cycle process. During a cycle many people don't run any lights for the first 3 months to stop feeding it.. but it's just one of those things to fight through right now.
You said all your levels are 0 -- does that include phosphates?
