my green open brain has some small clear looking tentacles that stick out on one side of it. is this normal? does it mean it's hungry or anything? i only notice it on one side, around where the thicker outer lip is. any clues??

Im not sure about the brain, but I have a crystal coral, and it also has these tentacles, and uses them to feed, and also can sting if something threatens it or gets near the tentacles..Maybe it shows in one of your Reef books, about that particular Brains, as to if thats the way it feeds or not..
Sorry I couldnt be of more help

i see now they have gone back down. i just turned the lights on. maybe that was what triggered it or either it just does that at night. i did add some microvert when i turned off the lights last night.
i don't have any reef books. most are old, and opinionated. i've found you get different answers depending on where you look and who you ask. they are good for the basic understandings. i was hoping someone who already has one could tell me. experience is the best teacher imo. thanks for the replies peeps. :)

My brain coral does that. I believe it has to do with feeding at night. When the lights are on it seems to be feeding off the zooxanthelae, when the lights go off, it uses the small tentacles to capture plankton.

no baron, no other coral near the brain. there is my sand sifting goby that goes near it, and some hermits. maybe they disturbed it somehow
$altydog, that sounds alot like what's going on with mine. after the lights were on for a few minutes the tentacles retracted, and the brain has kinda inflated a little. hopefully that's it and i'll just start making sure to feed when i turn the lights off for it. thanks again, fellas.=)

Byrself,
mine does the puffing up thing too! I think it exposes as much of the coral flesh as it can toward the light to get the most it can out of it. Sounds like you have a very nice, healthy piece if brain coral. Good luck.
