what causes green hair algae, and how do you get rid of it? i use ro water and i have a fuge with a ton of cheato in it. i thought that haveing a fuge with macros was supposed to almost eliminate micro algaes b/c they were in competitiion for the same nutrients and the macros always win? i dont know maybe its just a common sense question and im just stupid.

Ya know I have zero phosphates in my tank and still get a small amout of hair alge. I run a awesome skimmer (ETSS) rated for 180gl on a 65 and do weekly water changes ...but it still gets in there. I even ran a small fuge for a while and it still happened.
What are your phos levels and nitrate levels?

place sea urchins right on top of the problem..they will clean it up but then they wonder off so keep them in place... worked for me!!!

Hey Blaze,
I have a bad problem with green algae. It is on about 25% of my rocks. I have done a few things:
First find what is causing the issue: Mine happened to be the MH's running for 8 hours per day.
Phosphates is 0
No natural sunlight.
1) Tried to treat chemically. This caused an ammonia spike.
2) Bought a urchin. Now this guy is taking care of business but, he is also eating my coraline.
3) Adding more hemits and turbos to get the situation undercontrol....

I keep moving him back to the areas in need, since he has his own plan.. It is pretty funny to watch him, he has a bunch of shells on him, looks like a regualr little hermit urchin.

Whats your bioload? How deep and old is your sandbed? Regardless of filtration, the nutrients have to be coming from somewhere. IMO emerald crabs have done a great job in the past for me.
Good on ya

How old are your bulbs? I changed mine, and did the toothbrush thing, cut back on feeding, got a lot of snails,I also added 2 power heads for more flow, now my tank looks great.
