Green Hair Algae

I've had a 75 gallon fish only tank for over a year now. I'm still pretty green in the hobby. Recently my live rock has become overgrown with unsightly green hair algae. I was wondering what causes it and how do I get rid of it? I have slowly been putting together a "clean up crew" Is there anything else I can do?

Well, your hair algae is most likely just due to the cycle, but it could also be caused by phosphates. Test your water for phosphates, and re-post, if you have them, try to get rid of them by doing water changes with phosphate-free water, use phosphate pads, and to check your carbon to be assured it is phosphate-free. If you don't have them, then it is just a natural part of the cycle, and IMO, cannot be avoided. HTH

I agree with Dem. keep building your clean-up crew and maybe cut down on your light to maybe 3-4hrs a day for about a week or so and see if that makes a change also
hope this helps
