Ok I feel like I have to be the old lady that saves things when they are in need. I am on a business trip to Nor Cal and there is a LFS that has an 18" green moray eel sitting in a 25 gallon tank!!!!!! I want to know if I can take him and house him in a 125 by himself for a while.
This is a screaming deal, the guy wants only $100!!!! I know that these are the biggest, baddest eels in the sea, but it would be a kick to have such a great eel in my collection.
Let me know your thoughts.
(by the way, dont flame me as I know this eel will eventually need 500+ gallons when full grown)

Sounds like a great deal!~ I would! Try it b/c if that is the only fish in the tank I would feel it is big enough.

There's a green moray in a 55gal on youtube. The guy feeds him a whole mullet or mackeral or something with a fishing rod. Pretty sick vid, if you don't find it, I'll looking later for it later after work...
EDIT: Looked for it anyway, here;

Maybe a bit bigger then 55gal, the guy claims 168gal

Oh dude...she already yelled at me about it..."if you bring that home, you are sleeping with it!"
I think that it would be a kick in the ass to have a FOWLR, Reef, and specimen tank.
LOL i would be at 180 (soon to be 400+), 125-180 for the eel, 55g QT, 30g QT, and 20g reef...

While you might be able to keep a small Green Moray in a 125 gallon tank.
Keep in mind - Green Morays will get to be Monsters - about 7-8' long.
The sites that say it needs at least a 180 gallon - is completely wrong. For these monsters I would suggest at least 400-500 gallons. I've seen a 4' Green Moray in a 240' gallon(luckily it was the only fish in the tank)in a LFS, but it still looked a bit cramped.

I agree with everyone. This sucker is mean. He is not happy in his current house and I want to get him back home to take care of him properly. I am upgrading to a 400+ tank next year, but will have expensive angels in there that I dont want anything to happen to. If I get this eel it will be in it's own tank.

LOL...I really wish I could get him. It would be fun to watch him grow. But in the end, my fish are my pride, and to tell you the truth, eels scare the crap out of me!
When I was little swimming off the shore of Maui, I encountered a full sized Moray with its mouth open about 4 feet from me. That scared me for life.

Good decision - not getting the Green Moray.
Truth is there are alot better choices of Eels that can possible be kept safely with Angels.

Absolutely the right decision. It is an eel, IMO, that should not be sold in this hobby.
A 400g, IMO, is not large enough for a grown green moray.

I would love to have a several thousand gallon tank with a green moray. but I'd just be scare he would make a snack out of the other fish in the tank. There is a lfs store in town that has a 10,000 gallon tank with a moray he is dang cool.

Fedel that eel is great!
How was his temperment when you first got him? The one that I was looking at was mean as hell and wanted nothing to do with other fish. I suspect that it was due to the confined quarters it was it though.
