They will also slowly cover close parts of your tank. My LFS has a tank with them covering one side of the glass in their tank.

not only are they a great beginner species, you can also propagate them easily. just snip or tear off a piece of the mat, attach it to a rock with a rubber band, and it will bond to the rock within a week or so. they are really cool for their bright fluorescent green color and their hardiness. mushrooms and button polyps are also a good beginner soft corals and are also easily propagated. trumpet or candy coral (Caulastrea furcata or Caulastera curvata) make great beginner hard corals for their hardiness, ability to survive with less intense light, and their beautiful coloration. hope this helps :)

great way to start...I think they are very easy...I've had mine for a while...shrooms are rather easy as well.
