I have had my green star polyps for about 3 months now, everything has been doing great and it has grown quite a bit since i got it as a frag, now the polyps wont open or if they do very little, this started about a week ago I didn't think to much of it at first. I have done 40% water change in the last week and its looking a little better anyone have any idea's on whats going on? I have checked everything and its all in normal range.

They get cranky sometimes. I have had them close up for 2 weeks before amd they opened up. GSP is actually pretty tough to kill.

Make sure theyre getting decent flow, but its not pounding them. Mine are fairly skiddish when it comes to things touching them.

I know it is getting good water flow,
ph 8.0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate is 0 or 10 its hard to tell
Ammonia 0
Alk 3.0
It is stock lighting, I know I know everyone tells me to upgrade but so far it seems to be working fine, and my LFS in town says that I do not need to upgrade it, it olds my frogspawn and everything fine so far. I did have a arrowcrab go missing a couple of days ago, maybe that might be the reason why it is unhappy?

what was the answer to the closed polyps? water quality, water flow, lighting ? I'm having the same issue. I noticed they were getting to much flow after the koralia's were added so I moved them to a med light med flow and water quality is as good as I can get it.

How long have you had them? Could take weeks to open.

I've had them 2 weeks or so. They were open the very first day. My phosphates were high and I wasnt aware so the brown algae sprung into action as soon as the new lights were added. The algae also got on the star polyps. The polyps then retracted so the next day I removed the algae from the polyps using a brand new paint brush. A few showed themseves again. Then once again they dissapeared.

As others have said, they are pretty tough corals-mine get some really good flow, constantly waving in the breeze, and loving it. I have 5 Koralias of different sizes in my tank and believe in lots of flow, as long as the polyps aren't being damaged. I have had to trim mine a few times and it was not an easy time for the gsp as I used a razor knife to cut away the mat. That being said, 24 hours later they were beginning to open up again and 2 days later were fully open and looking happy. As happy as a coral polyp can be, anyway!
As for your water quality, just what are the measurements? you mention that it's as good as you can get but just what does that mean as far as actual levels go?

IME, GSP is the coral i worry the least about. I have 3 different kinds and they will go closed for a day or two every so often. some time if a fish, hermit, snail etc rubs on them mine will take hours to reopen. The first frag I got took 2 weeks+ to open all the way. So moving them could cause them to take a while to open back up.
As was said before as long as the mat is still purple no need to worry.

I have 2 pieces in my tank, one closed up for 5 days while the other was just fine. My water tested fine also, but the problem was an uncured piece of live rock I added to the tank. The water flow off that piece was the cause of the problem.
