Its used to absorb any electricity in your tank generated by pumps, etc. It has to be plugged into the wall and connected to a GCFI outlet. I think there is some info on this in the FAQ forum

i think there was an article saying that if you dont have any stray voltage, and you add a grounding probe to your tank, it could actually cause stray voltage to your tank. so its best to only add one if your positive you have stray voltage in your tank. or something along those lines.
i dont use one, i just have everything besides my light plugged into a gfci.
