i have about 15-20lbs of live rock in my 30gal tank and the past month ive been noticing more of these spots on my rock. they are purple patches with spikes all over them. i thought it would be some kind of sponge or something. does this sound familiar to anybody?

sounds like foraminiferans - do a search - red spiky often mis-identified as red spiky corraline algea.
Your water quality has to be pretty good to get these - supposedly.

Do your spikes look like small hardened tubes, about 1/8 inch long? I have these taking over, if disturbed they throw out a thin webbing. I believe the coraline has covered them and gives them the appearence of being purple. With that said, touch them--if it feels like a sponge (literally) then its most likely one, if hard then I would say no. With sponges, or at least the HH I have there is always an opening present (sometimes more than 1).

small critter - builds a red spiky shell - some species harvest algea inside the shell and use calci8um from the water column to continue building their home and making it larger .... generally a good sign ....

thanks - slooooooooow typing tonight .... man I was feeling like a high school teacher all over again:
No, kids - really I know what I'm talking about ...... no seriously - I do .... no really .... (begins banging head on the wall) .... no really - knowing how to read and research just may pay off in the long run ... no seriously ....
OK sorry - rant over. Just spent the past 2 hours doing a 35 gallon water change on my 140 .... need a bigger pump!!!

ok, mine seems to be a different situation---got any ideas what I may have? These tubes are hard (I could, if I wanted to, break it off, but wont do that) They shoot out a webbing if disturbed (cleaning rocks, glass, ect.) :)

most forams are far too small to see like the pics waterfaller posted (unless you got some good magnifiers handy). The easiest way to tell is if it feels like hard poky stuff .... and the color is notthe exact color of your coralline ....
I'd try and post a pic but my girls have been asleep since 8 and the tank is in their room - and none in my 140 that I can see ....
good luck. Cool looking stuff - they can compete for food (filter feeder so not sure how much food they can compete for ...) and calcium so some people remove them ....

Do they look like the smallest end of a toothpick? Not soft either. If so I've got bunches of them. Will take a picture when the tank 'wakes up'

Sounds just like 'em!! If you havea good camera it would be sweet if you got some nice close-ups of 'em!!
