Guitar Question...

Hey y'all! Just a quick question. Does anyone on here have a Chet Atkins Guitar? If so what year and brand?
I noticed yesterday that Gretsch re-introduced the Chet Models in January. Has anyone heard anything about them?

saw one in a pawn shop years ago for $800, never played one though.
I think Gretsch's are known to have skinny necks and jazzy pickups, that's about about all I know.
I went on Musician's Friend and couldn't find any info. if I'm not mistaken, the old Chet Atkins Gretsch's were called "The Country Gentleman".

I thought the Country Gentleman Chet was famous for playing was a Gibson. One of Gibson's top of the line guitars. Not as famous as the Les Paul, but very popular.

Yeah I saw one on Musicians Friends the other day. Yes, Chet did have a Gibson Country Gentlemen. He switched from Gretsch to Gibson because during the 70's Gretsch had some tech problems. What really stinks is that Gibson doesn't make the Country Gentlemen Gutiars anymore!!!!! I thought they did but they dont. Oh well. Thanks for the info guys!

Might try harmony-central.com They have a ton of reviews on different types of gear. Pretty thorough. And if not, people on the message boards there are overly dedicated retards with nothing better to do than talk trash to people unless they are using boutique amps and doing everything proper. But you can occasionally get some good info there.
BTW: Check out my bands demo: myspace.com/guiltyofaggression

i'd say the chet atkins sst by gibson is a sweet guitar. can't beat that tone and plays like a dream. love the star inlays on the fretboard and bridgeboard. wish i had one and will someday, but for now if you want something new, check out the taylor t5 custom koa. discontinuing koa wood in the near future according to Mr. Dykes, himself. Met him at a guitar workshop he had here around xmas time. Anyway, if you got a spare $2000 layin around, the t5 is the way to go. trust me.

Yeah I LOVE the T-5. I've been re-thinking this guitar situation. It's either the 614 Taylor or the T-5. I thought about the DDSM but who has $3000? hahahah. It's a regualar $4000 at the guitar store that carries them here in town...but since I can play some of Doyle's songs they marked the price down by a thousand bucks! How cool is that? That's still a lot of money.
Y'all are the first to know this...I was talkin to Holli Dykes at school and she said "Be on the look out for more of my dad's models!" She was tellin a bunch of other cool stuff too but I shouldn't talk about that. Ok I'll tell you one thing...He "might" be have his own T-5 model coming out in the future.

What are you playing now? Hopefully a Taylor...they are the best. I've got a 510 CE. Not your typical model though. Has some kind of special inlays that i have not seen on any other 510s. They are snowflakes. Pretty sweet. You can check it out on my myspace page... http://www.myspace.com/ryanolsenmusic
Yeah I have not heard about a dykes t5 but pretty much figured it was gonna happen eventually. sure it will be something of epic proportions.
after you tell me what you are playing, i can give you a better idea of what i think you should buy. if you already have a sweet taylor big body, i would say go with the t5, but if not, you gotta go with the 614. have to have a big old hollow body first in foremost imo. they are so versatile. a t5, i would consider more of a little bonus to something bad ass like a 614.
got any nice electrics? (les paul, sg, strat, tele?)

Yeah I wish I had a Taylor. I just have an Ibanez right now...Maple Back and Sides, Spruce top. My dad wont let me or him spend that much on a guitar just yet...even though I've been playin for 4 years.
I'm a fingerstyle guitar player...Like Chet Atkins, Doyle, and Tommy Emmanuel. People keep tellin me to get a 614ce. That's my future guitar most likely because it's basically the same thing as a DDSM.
Nope I don't play any electic guitars. I'm mainly an acousic guy. My nails get a beatin though. hahaha.
Nice inlays on your Taylor. I've never seen those before on a Taylor.

That's totally cool...I had a really decent ibanez acoustic/electric about 8 years ago. it was my first and kind of a entry level model, but really was good for helping me develop. I'm not much a fingerstyle guy, kinda into that dave matthews, oar, howie day kind of realm of style. not too complicated but fun as hell to sit and jam some of that stuff out.
really only play electric when i'm all plugged in with a drummer and bass even then it's still limited. i play mostly acoustic because its so versatile. since i have my 510ce and love it so much, i think it'll be a while before i buy another big boy. my next axe will definitely be a koa t5 or gibson sst chet. i'm all set on antique electrics. got a 69 gibson sg special and a 80 les paul standard.
thanks for the comments on my taylor. people can say all day long that they spent $2000 on a guitar because of the quality and how nice it feels to play. while that is about 95% true, can't really dismiss that fact that we spend all this money on things that are also easy on the eyes. good to hear that someone else thinks it's as cool as i do.
make a point of getting a 614 if it's the last thing you do on this earth...

Koa T-5's are nice!!! I like Doyle's orange one, the Koa, and the Black ones. hahaha. Don't you wish we could own all of them? Yeah I know what you mean about what a guitar looks like for the eyes. I look for a certain color...wood style...inlay designs...etc. If it doesn't, on my future Taylor that I'm lookin' for, I'll get them to make one to my standards. haha.
Do you have pictures of your other guitars around?

Thanks but no thanks! Just got back from a short trip. We went to an AWESOME guitar shop and they have even lower prices on Taylor Guitars!!!
For a C1-Custom Maple the retail is $3498 but their price is $2099.95
For a S1-Standard Maple...retail = $3098...their price = $1859.95
I couldn't belive it because where I live the T-5's are $2500 for a Standard and around $3300? for a Custom.

Could be the market. That's how I got my Yairi Classical for $1200 when it cost $2400.
