Had a tank scare this afternoon

I came home and the whole house was really hot. I had forgotten to leave the window unit on before I left the house for school this morning. Ooops.
The second thing that I didn't see creeping up was that my main large powerhead had quit working and wasn't giving the tank enough current. So, I got that back running by putting it on a different socket. Checked it all out to make sure there wasn't any kind of short or whatever... all is good - no idea why my Apex unit cut off the flow to that socket. I'm going to have to figure that one out - unless it was my daughter that messed with the settings on my Apex, which could very well be the case.
Mistake three - adding ulva algae to my refugium. It's been a plague in my pumps for the last couple of months. Every time I think I have eradicated it out of my system, I pull out another chunk of it that has decided to get stuck in a pump impeller. Right now it's making my return pump a little less effective and also making my skimmer not work right. So, I'm going to have to pull both pumps and get the algae out of it for good this time.
I accidently also let my alkalinity get down way too low, so I compensated for it this evening and got it back up to 3.7. :D

Well that stinks. Glad you caught things in time.
I thought the Apex would alert you if it had a piece of equipment stop working?? I have heard that they are a bit tough to program and stuff.
Hopefully things in the tank will bounce back with all the changes.

It would unless a setting had been manually changed. My wife lets our daughter in th kitchen when she cooks or does things and one of thr things she likes to do is mess with computer cords and push buttons on the apex monitor. My wife doesnt think there is a single problem wrong with letting her be curious, as long as she wont get hurt. I think otherwise.
In any case, this morning things looked like they were getting back to normal. My skimmer pump is clogged with algae, so it will still have to be cleaned. I also noticed that the return pump is still pushing about as hard as it was yesterday before bed, so ill have to do something this evening about it.
If its not one thing its another!
I have lab finals this week and then a regular week and then the rest of my finals. Busy busy. Almost too busy to pay attention to the tank. Heh.

Hi,
I'm with you. A child needs to be taught from a very young age that some things are not for them to touch, it belongs to somebody else, and it's not hers. That being said, all kids love buttons...they do sell plastic covers that open with a key to cover thermostats, you should be able to find one thet will fit your controller....maybe look on-line.

I just need to have a chat with my wife and problem solved. Im not letting my child run around and do anything without consequences. I wasnt raised that way and im certainly not raising her that way either.
All is good tonight. :)

Like you said...if it's not one thing, it's another. Sorry to hear about the problems, man.
Here's a thought. You know those protective plastic boxes that offices sometimes use to keep pesky employees away from the thermostat?? Any chance the APEX controller will fit in there? I don't think they're that expensive. Little fingers are going to find buttons, no matter how many times you say "no," and this way you might avoid an altercation with the missus....

My granddaughter loves turning off my computer, she likes the blue glow of the button. I covered it with black electrical tape, no more blue glow, we will see tomorrow if she leaves it alone.
