I was deepening my sandbed and in doing so, I had to get up close over my tank to get the new sand into the back of my tank as I have a large canopy on top of the tank. as I was so close to the lights, I caught the hot burning smell, like a hot curling iron. I said to myself, "man, these halides sure smell hot when you get up close to them". after a couple minutes, I realized that the smell was due to the fact that my head was attached to one of the 400 watt bulbs. not close enough to my scalp for me to feel it, but it had enough of my hair to singe a patch of hair. luckily, didn't do much damage, but another minute or two and I would have a bulb shaped bald spot or my hair would've went off Michael Jackson style.
