Just got a purple sea whip.
it has about 5 hairy shrooms at the base around it.
they close up when some frozen mysis gets on it to eat.
since it was a nice surprise when I got them.
i was wondering if they can possible eat my ponies?
I fragged one off the base, and it smelled.
if that helps. Ive seen the ponies hanging out around and perched right in it.
I dont want to lose my ponies.
Thanx

Only if they're actually large enough to consume the horse will they 'eat' it. Of course they can very danm well try, and they pack a pretty serious punch that can do some damage to a seahorse....

Can you post a picture. The only shroom that poses a threat are elephant ears. Hairys are a zero on the compatibility chart. They should be just fine. I dont think a shroom can close up on a healthy horse fast enough to eat it.

Sounds like you got some nice hitch hikers, but I would be concerned in a seahorse tank. Do you have another tank you could put them in?? Or sell to local reefer or lfs. Wouldn't be worried, but read this post last night.

Also, when you fragged, was it the actuall mushroom that smelled, or the live rock its attached to. Is it possible something on the rock has died during shipping. I would keep a close eye on ammonia etc. Just in case.

Yes, Mushroom corals can eat fish.
Furry mushrooms, carlgreni and st. thomas more so than acinto, rho etc etc...
Yes, Mushrooms can eat fish, YES they can eat sea horses and YES they can eat an entire one.
Remember, mushrooms are ANEMONES!

Yes things are always possible, BUT A healthy seahorse should not be eaten my a regular hair shroom. Read the compatibility chart. It was written by very experienced SEAHORSE keepers. I totally trust their research and charts. I have kept them with my horses and never had any worries. I have Rics and scrooms along with zoos and duncans now. Shrooms dont sting and a healthy horse will be able to just swim away if a shroom starts to close

General principle is sound: most 'shrooms pose no threat to a healthy seahorse. Elephant mushrooms are the main exception to this statement, and as a precaution I would probably eliminate any mushroom that grew more than 3 or 4 inches, just to be sure. But I wouldn't let that stop me from keeping mushrooms or 'rics in with my seahorses....in fact I intend on keeping a ricorda and striped mushroom garden down at the base of the rocks in my horse tank.

What type of seahorse do you have? You mention ponies, are you talking dwarfs? If so, then I would be very careful putting any carnivore in with them. Also the compatibility cart isn't written for dwarf seahorses.
