Hang on Back Filter and Maximizing Potential

Currently I am running an Eshops 75 HOB skimmer and it works awesome! I am also running a HOB power filter that came with the tank....a 36 bow front. Two power heads provide nice current as well. My question is this, is there a way or even a need to maximize the power filters performance? I.e. Remove the filter medium and go to a ceramic type? Bio balls? It's small, but macroalgae?

As it is, it filters well but accumulates green slime... I am wondering if this is detrimental to my tank health, the slime. I clean it regularly but still wonder?....I remember the guy at my LFS saying something about how they build up junk and are not great for my tank.

I know a refugium is preferred but can I stay away from building one by a DIY hack?

I just watched a video that showed pretty much what I was looking for....the guy had filled his aqueon hob with filter medium like scrubbies and was planning on switching to ceramic. I am guessing that the first mechanical filter ( white fibre) is what needs to be cleaned every so often and the bio media stays in and grows beneficial bacteria?

Bacteria will grow on anything. Filter media is just convenient for it. I change my media maybe 1 every 6months. Alternative between cartridges. I clean the filter it self more
