Should I buy just a normal tank not drilled and just buy a hang on back overflow or should I spend the extra money and get one with a built in overflow?
thanks.

I personally would get one with it built in. With the hang ons there is just to much that can go wrong IMO.

RR for sure. I drilled my tank after suffering the worry and hassle of an OF box. If I had it to do over again, I would definitely go with a drilled or RR tank from the start.

Thats really the ultimate way to go. If I ever go with a custom tank it will have the Calfo style overflow.

I started out with the hang ons on my 90 gallon and then spent $400 for my LFS owner to come out to my house a drill it.

I figured I'd be in the minority, but I love HOB overflow boxes. I'll never buy the "it will eventually fail" argument. If set-up correctly and given even minimal maintenance, they're just as reliable as internal overflows. My tank has been through extended power failures, GFCI shutoffs, you name it.....never had a problem. And there's at least a half-dozen ways around the noise issue.
Biggest advantages over internal overflows:
1) They take up much less tank space.
2) You can remove and clean them easily.

Agreed, calfos are the best option....just so damn expensive to have a tank customized with one.

I don't know about cost. I have never spoke with a custom tank builder. That is an Aqueion tank that I cut up. It took a while.

I know a guy who had a 300g custom tank built with a closed loop and a Calfo overflow. Quality work by a reputable builder, but the tank cost over $5K.
