Hang on Cascade Filter?

I currently have a prefilter with 35gal wet dry for my 55gal, while i am aware that i need a skimmer i was wondering if adding one of these would help my water at all? or would it be useless? thanks

I have a cascade canister (penn plax) and it works great. Good product, dont know anything about the hang on though, and i really didnt answer your question so I'll ---- up now
