Hang-on overflow box questions.

Well I got me one of these thingymajigs (CPR style overflow box) and it has what I would call a flaw I cannot remedy.
My question is to those who have used this style overflow in the past. In the top of box there is a airline bulkhead to run some air tubing from the overflow to a powerhead to pull water and bubbles out of the siphon chamber. This is hooked up and seems to work just fine for a good while. But eventually something happens and the bubbles increase and accumulate in that back corner of the siphon chamber. When enough bubbles accumulate the siphon decreases and the level in the display rises. I'm assuming this isn't supposed to happen because it shouldn't. As I have it hooked up now, the small powerhead pulls bubbles out of the overflow boxes siphon chamber almost constantly. The bubbles never slow or lessen.
Is this normal? Has everybody else that has used this chambered type of overflow experienced the same bubble accumulation? Any tricks to get rid of the bubbles and ensure a safe, flaw-free overflow siphon?
I want to be able to leave my aquarium in the hands of a noob for atleast 2 weeks with no worry about the overflow siphon. I should get a drilled tank then shouldn't I?

drilled tanks are nice, but they arent a necessity. you should not be getting bubbles. maybe change the elevation of the cup so that the water is not dropping as far of a distance? its hard to help here without a pic
