Hang on Overflow

Okay so I am getting ready to set up a sump under my tank so I can hide my skimmer and get more water in my system. I have been checking out some sites and found that CPR seems to be a very popular hang on overflow, but I also visited one site that had a huge warning against using them, saying they have a tendency to flood your floor!?! So here is what I am asking in a long winded way, what overflows are recommended? Is there anything I can do to minimize a flood? I rent so flooded floors would be very bad???? Thanks

I've used both cpr and lifereef external overflows. My preference is the lifereef much less of a pain to deal with. No additional powerhead to keep the siphon, and if the power goes out the lifereef keeps its siphon. I've never had a lifereef lose its siphon. I've had several disasters with the cpr. Just my $.02

so exactly why does the cpr need a powerhead, I looked at some pics online and saw nothing about a Powerhead. Please explain.

Ibelieve it is because they use a J-tube design for their siphon tube. When not enough water is being pudshed through the unit(ie, power outage, snail caught or something) they lose their siphon and dont send any water to the sump while the pump in the sump continues to pushwater into the tank causing the overfow, flood, disaster. Life reef and aquaclear use a U-tube design which sits in the water more therefore no air bubbles and no siphon break. HTH

i have a cpr-s50 and even know i have never had any problems with it i have a powerhead setup for it and idk what you mean by j tube but mine dosent have any tubes.I dont know mine is only 300gph and my sump can hold all my water and so can my tank so im not worried.

I have the Amiracle overflow and it works great, doesn't lose siphon and won't flood the floor as long as you don't fill the sump too high to start.
Just as info, I modified my U-tube with a small plastic fitting with a screw in side to cut off the air flow. Really easy to start the siphon again, just open screw attach regular air hose and suck till it's started than close screw off.
I did this to keep from loosing so much food to the sump and the ease of restarting the siphon all the time. My sump if I let it fill till it naturally stops the bio balls would float up and get all over the place, a reall PIA.

I have and swear by...
LifeReef, Marineland SOS, and a couple of home made jobs...
Oh and the SOS is quiet, can barely hear it...way quieter then the LifeReef
