Seriously considering addition of either a ecosystem40 or a CPR 18" hang on refugium.......any experience/comments/suggestions from ya'all on either of these units.....pros/cons
55 gal reef..cpr bacpac 2r..100 lbs lr..40 lbs ls..260 watts CSL pc..assorted polyps/mushrooms..yellow tang..dragon goby..coris wrasse..tomato clown..all water tests are good except nitrates are 5....
just wanting to improve conditions short of adding sump/refugium under this tank

Hmmmmmm....either I'm being ignored...
or nobody has comment
or opinion on these 2 products
no info out there on adding either a ecosystem40 or CPR 18" hang on refugium.......want to have added help in controling algae as well as benefits of safe place to harbor copepods for the main tank......

Although I have seen them on the web,I have not talked to anyone that actually has one. LOOKS LIKE YOUR THE GUINNEY PIG.Let us know how it works.Personally I would reccomend saving a couple hundred dollars and get a cheap 10 gallon glass tank and set up one under your main tank.

Mr. Salty....TREY......I value and appreciate the advice and opinion of both of you.......my 55 reef is still very young(4 months next week) and this is my first venture in sw....like my tank I too am still learning and growing.....I've researched and archivied sumps/refugiums till my eyes hurt....truth is I just don't feel ready to go the remote type set-up......guess I'm just scared to go that route.....I do have a 29 gal that could be used...plus I could add a seperate 10 gal also for refugium only......matter of fact I've looked at placeing this behind the wall in a seperate work shop behind my 55 gal.........but here is my line of thinking.....this is my 1st set-up.....I love it to date....in the future I plan to progress to a 180+ gal set up ...when I do I'd like to have it where my 55 now sits....then I'd have the sump/refugium behind the wall and plumb it to the tank.....for now while I learn and gain experience I thought a simpler set-up could benefit my 55 gal and help me gain confidence and experience....does any of this make since................

If your tank is only 4 months old,it is really not compleatly done with the cycle. I personally think that the cycle is not done till the bi[ system is not only established, but stable and the tank is mature. This could be another two or three months. Till then I'm not convinced that an algae refugium would do much good.I understand your thinking, but buying an expensive refugium now, that will be pretty much usless on your bigger tank,is not the way I would go.That is if you really are planning on going bigger soon. I would use this smaller tank as a lerning experience, and save your money for the bigger setup. As I stated before,I have not seen any of these store bought refugiums setup on a tank yet.And I think that they are really kinda small to do very much good.

I have not added one yet. I am still looking and thinking. However, I will make one out of plexiglass. It can not be that difficult to cut and glue plexiglass into a large rectangle, then add the pipe fittings, a pump and a powerhead. I have also been looking for an already made rubbermaid type of container that might work. However, I have not found anything yet. I also have a 55 gallon tank, and with my set up I might be able to do an under the tank model but I would perfer not to have to pump the water back into the tank. The passive flow is better.
Good luck,
Connie
