Happy 311 Day

I saw them play live many many years ago and met S.A. Martinez (the rapper, the one with his tongue stuck out in the picture above) after the show, he was a pretty nice guy. got his autograph on the ticket stub. I don't care for them much anymore now that I'm grown (kind of outgrown that style of music). but if you're a bassist, I can see why you like them. P-Nut is a phenominal bassist.
when I saw them play, Sugar Ray was the opening band. and though I think Sugar Ray is god awful, they put on a helluva live show (as did 311)

Growing up in Omaha when 311 was just a local band was very cool.
I've seen them at least 25 times, and the best shows were the ones in the early 90's playing in front of maybe 500 people. At the time, I hated seeing them get popular because I knew each member of the band, and I disliked watching them change with success. The weird thing about 311 is thier fans. I've never heard people argue about how long they've been a fan, or call new fans posers, except with this band. Considering the band is one that preaches positivity, I always found this amussing.
Chad Sexton is the best drummer I've ever seen live. Of all the old, rare 311 stuff I had, the one thing I kept is a used drumstick he signed for me after a show in '97.
Transistor is the cd that kinda turned me away. I didn't want to hear SA sing. Music and Grassroots are by far their best cds followed by the Self Titled. They're all I listened to through junior high and high school, so I'll still buy every cd to give it a chance, but I highly doubt anything will match their first 3 main releases.
You can download their earlier stuff prior to Music. It's not great, but if you're a fan, it's definitely cool hearing what they sounded like when they first started.

I heard a rumor they named themselves 3-11 after the police code for 3-11...i.e."we have a 3-11 in progress".

Im a big fan of 311. Catch them live atleast once a year. I am actually going on Sunday night in Columbus. Cant wait. They always put on a great live show!
My favorite 311 album is Grassroots. Transistor was a bit of a turnoff, but it still has a few good tracks. I think 311 continues to make great music.

nah, that goes on with pretty much any band that makes it big. the biggest one, I think, is Metallica. nobody wants to be the guy that started liking Metallica when they heard "Enter Sandman" on the radio. everybody was supposedly there when "Kill'em All" came out, funny though that Metallica weren't actually selling many records at that time, so somebody must be lying. same with Nirvana and other bands too.
but yeah, it's a cool story and I totally get it. I was big into the band Dinosaur Jr before they were known (not that they ever got REALLY famous). then they had a hit song on mtv and I was pissed.

Just got back from the 311 show in Columbus tonite and again they put on a great show. I prefer outdoor concerts for a large crowd but Ill take it.
Chads drum solo was AMAZING! It was already good but I think this one was a good 5 minutes long. It was a mello show for 311. usually they play alot of older songs but not this spring I guess.
So no freakout shogun. I really like that jam too.
Also the opening band Ballyhoo was great. This was by far there biggest gig and they deserve to be noticed. They are playing a ton of small shows across the country and even coming to my, and shoguns, hometown in May! cant wait.
