some areas of the top layer of my sand is very hard and clumped together. why is it doing this? how do i fix it? is it bad? is it ok to break it up? :help:
yeah its ok to break up. just every time you do a water change, mix the top layer of your sand bed around. or you could get a sand shifter to do your dirty work.

yeah, You can buy some nass snails. They stay under the sand and only come out when feed your fish. they do an excellent job of shifting my sand around.
agree, also make sure you don't have any dead spots, in other words(enuf circulation)
also, a cucumber, conch, and a gobie do really good at keeping the sand stirred....
thanks, i have 2 nass. snails....can i get more? the tank is a 12 gallon. also just curiouse, will a neon goby dig around in the sand? (do they dig burrows or sift the sand? at my 1 lfs the tank with them in it has large pieces of cc so i dont know how they behave in sand.)

yeah you can definetly get more snails, as for the goby it will be fine , it sifts/turns the sand without causing a drop on water quality....
