In starting a SWA for a noob, what kinda of fish or marine life are most recommended? what are the so called goldfish and bettas of salt water? I would be more than happy to start off with some crabs, hermit crabs, shrimp and one or two hardy fish. what would you recommend you've had the best luck with?

damsels are by far the most hardiest and inexpensive of saltwater fish
depending on your tank size trigger fish are very hardy and are beautiful personable fish, but research before you buy you need a large tank min 75 gal

First off, what size tank do you plan on starting with? Easy fish for small tanks, Damsels(but very aggressive), chromis, clowns, some gobies, some wrasse, etc. It mainly depends on what you like and what size tank for starters. Most books and websites, including this one, list the difficulty of the fish. Go to the top of the lt side bar and look at the fish list. It will give you some basic info and a pic of fish.

The tank is a standard size 10 gallon. with 15 pounds of live rock, on a live sand bed I know I cant expect more than 2-3 small fish, I hope that helps alot in selecting hardy fish for such a tank, also I feel the need to mention/ask what and how many crustaceons, inverts, urchins, etc would be good in such setting? again a standard 10 gallon, 15lb live rock, on live sand bed, not to be annoying but I want to give the most though info so I dont waste time, money & effort learning the hard way. seems theres not too much that is hardy when it comes to salt water, if parameters are stable, what are reliable life forms I can cohabitate happily, the more the better
