i want to start a pico and have a pair of harlequin shrimp, i know they eat startfish, so am i supposed go to the store and buy a linkia starfish everyweek? Or do they come frozen or what. And how big do they get.

Here is some info on your shrimp:
QUICK STATS
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Peaceful
Reef Compatible: Yes
Water Conditions: 72-78° F, dKH 8-12, sg 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4
Max. Size: 1½"
Color Form: Purple, Red, Tan, White
Diet: Carnivore
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Family: Gnathophyllidae
The LFS here has feeder stars that they can order, however linkia's are going to be a VERY expensive meal. You might want to consider a Chocolate Chip Star, they are much more cheapter than the Linkia. Here linkia are 50-75 depending on the color.

Please do not feed them Linckia. I would strongly suggest feeding Asterina which are very easy to maintain and grow. Certainly if you have a pico tank you can not do Linckia as having a large stressed/dying seastar is not likely to work.

I added some live rock a few months back, and it must have had asterina stars eggs, or very small stars inside the rock. Before long my tank had many stars, (never had this problem before, so must have been the new rock) added a harlequin shrimp and has slowly taken care of the problem, but will have stars to feed him for many months to come. Very interesting shrimp, out a lot of the time. Feed him these stars, you can order some from a online vender...search the word asterina stars....

I have a pair in my nano that I got from Divers Den and they have been happily munching on my Asterina overpopulation. Still plenty to go, but once they are done I'm planning on getting a feeder star as needed unless my Asterina population can be moved from other tanks.

Im dying to get a pair of them for my 24g tank but im too nervous about shipping them from an online vendor.
The other day I was in a LFS and they had 'harlequin shrimp' written on one of the tanks, so I asked about it but they said they sold it a long time ago

I have tons of asternia!
If anyone knows someone local to s.florida that has one/two let me know!

Mine came in just fine. They are very hardy and both were bagged in their individual bags with some cheato and a little rock in there. The size of the bag was huge compared to the normal invert bags.

Incidentally, it would not be a really big issue for ya'll with asterina's now to take some and cut then in half with a razor blade down the middle. Heck you can even try cutting arms off and seeing what happens. Technically this should keep the population going rather nicely.

they are AWESOME little shrimp..I use to have one. its just feeding them starfish and thats all they eat can get kinda old trying to keep up with that. I had one that would eat a whole choc chip star in about 3weeks or so. Also cutting starfish legs off..well on the choc chip is VERY TOUGH..it felt like I was trying to cut stone. If you can get a small tank and get a massive amount of them little astrenia stars breeding and such I would say that would make life alot easier.

so could I buy like 10 asterinas and let them "breed" for like 5 months and then add a pair to my 29BC reef? Would that work and then hopefully they would keep breeding and the shrimp would keep eating so it would be a cycle?
