Harlequin Shrimp

Just picked one up.I have like a hundred brittle stars and they are pissing my zoas off.Not anymore.Does anyone have any experience with these shrimp.The lfs said I could give it back when I am done.

LFS's will tell you anything you want to hear most of the time...you have to remember that they are in this business to make money...you should really do research before you buy something...i know it is tough not to impulse buy but it is for the best...

They eat the meaty legs off the star and then move on to the next one. Brittle stars don't have really anything in their legs.

This was not an impulse buy.Every where I read they say that they eat brittel stars.

Not sure where you've read that as I can't find a single major aquarium site that would say that.
Diet:
The Harlequin Shrimp's diet consists solely of the tube feet of Echinoderms in the Starfish Family. In Hawaiian waters we know that when you find a Harlequin Shrimp, the small Linkia species of Comet or Blood Spotted Starfish will usually be close by. This is its primary food source, but in some rare cases the Harlequin may accept other aquarium foods. Unless you have a good supply of starfishes for this shrimp to live on, and they are not particular of what kind, it does not do well in captivity. Don't keep any prized starfishes in the same tank with it.

sorry, i assumed that is was an impulse buy...however spiderwoman is right...they are not a brittle star eater...especially if they are the mini brittles....
