I know that this happens to lionfish because it happened to my fuzzy dwarf four or five months ago. It fixed itself within a few days though. Now, it has happened to my volitan and it has been this way since Wed. of last week (a total of 5 days so far). He ate like normal today though, eating 11 whole silversides. It looks like it bothers him a little bit, but I can't imagine it bothers him that much since he ate so well today. Plus, he is still acting like his normal self.
I know that their upper lip isn't totally connected, but I never saw it this far off either.

I've heard of it, but I have never really kept a lion. Going to move you over to the Aggressive Forum so you can get more input.

I have never seen it in a lon but it happened with a gold tiger datnoid i had when i was still in freshwater but it was a much more severe case his mouth was fully extended and locked into place i had to manualy force it back
i felt that i was feeding him to large of prey items so after that stuck with only smaller stuff and it never happened again

Does anyopne have the Conscientious Marine Aqurist by Robert Fenner? On page 208, in the lionfish disease section, he says:
"You will experience a shedding of skin with lionfish. Coughing, shaking and other symptoms may accompany this. In related species, it is thought to help get rid of unwanted algae growth and parasites."
Does anyone think that this could be it?

Trust me, I read his site all the time and I have not found anything on this. I do appreciate you giving me his email address though. That sounds like a good idea. I will let everyone know what he says.

So Bob responded with:
"Looks like a part of the upper jaw ligament has torn loose. Likely from either a bump into something or an over-extension during feeding. With time, hopefully this will self-heal. Not likely harmful. Bob Fenner"
This is very reassuring, as my lionfish is still doing well and eating well, yet his mouth is still as it is in the pictures.
