Have a lighting question

Ok I have a Current 135w PC light on my 30g tank. I wanted to up the wattage, and here is what I was thinking:
1) build a canopy
2) take apart and remount the 135w current light in the canopy
3) buy a 150w retro kit and mount in the canopy
Will this work?
Any suggestions?
Also the current lights have a plastic shield that protects the lights, but the metal halide will melt the plastic, so how do you protect the lights?

Instead of taking apart your fixture, build a canope with an open top, I am building one that my T5 fixture sits on. that way I syill have all the fixtures ventilation in tact. I am putting fans on the ends of the canopy for additional cooloing though. My plan has small removable covers to cblock in the the top where the fixture doesnt. Of course it depends on the size of your tank vs fixture when it comes to adding light. Just a thought, or rather one mans opinion.
