My roommate and I are going through this battle right now. It's a joint fish tank, and we both want different things. I LOVE biotype aquariums and it's actually kind of important to me, but she likes fish that have different shapes and different swimming levels, so obviously we are having some conflicts here. All that we have really decided on is a humu trigger.
You have so many options, find the fish that you like the most and go with that. I'm sure the tank will be beautiful no matter what you go with. Also, remember that not all fish will tolerate fish of their own kind, so if you were looking into a species only tank with multiple animals, it's something to keep in mind

If you got the money then getting a pair of golden dwarf eels in a 20g would be cool.
If not then I still vote for cuttlefish tank. That'd be one of the coolest fish/invert to have. I think all you got to do is just do a little bit more research to get your answers answered. Saltwater tanks in general seemed like a real challenge to me when I started reading about it, but now it's a piece of cake. Just takes some time to research that's all.
