having trouble

Having trouble getting nitrates below 20. Ive cut down on feeding. Been doing a 10% water change wkly. Any other advice?

crushed coral? are you rinsing or changing filter media regularly? rinsing prefilter sponges?

30 gallon. two false percs. I use a gravel vacum when I do my water changes weekly. take about 3 gallons out when I do these water changes.

What all should I be rinsing out in my filter? I have a few diff kinds of sponges. Charcoal(which is a new bag) and those little sperical bio beed things.

Rinse a portion of each during every water change. Rinse them in SW to avoid killing the beneficial bacteria.
Basically, anything that can collect detritus can add to your Nitrates.

Detrius is fish poop and other organic material that is collecting and degrading causing nitrates.
You also mentioned you have a 30 gallon, is it one of those all in one nano's with chambers in the back? If so check the back chambers for detrius and old food and siphon out what you can. During water changes turn off your pumps, take a turkey baster and blast it into the chamber to get the detrius off the floor to rise into the water. Then take your siphon hose and siphon out the water in the chamber which in turn will take out the detrius. Also use the same scenario on in your display area, but blowing detrius off the LR and into the water column to be siphoned out.
