You want to wait until the ammonia and trites spike and come back down to 0, and the trates will spike, you then do water changes to get them down, then you can slowly add fish. This will take 4-8 weeks. Don't know about the hawaiian base rock.

I bought 40 lbs for my 150 gal. It was nice, but very dirty. i really had to scrub it. the pieces were kinda plain but i used it under my good stuff and it worked great.

I don't know if what I got was hawaiian, but I got base cured with Fiji live and it looked realy nice. Had nice color on it, wasn't dirty at all and had no dieoff (well, nothing was live on it but the algae) and I paid $2/lb for it. Worked for me

If the rock is already cured then you will need to add an ammonia source to get the cycle going. A raw coctail shrimp works well. Wait for the ammonia to reach 1ppm and then take the shrimp out and let it finish cycling. When ammonia and nitrite reach a steady zero, it is safe to add fish.

It's against the law to remove rock from the ocean waters of Hawaii.
What you're probably buying in just lava, pumice, limestone, or tufa, from Hawaii that was thrown in with some Fiji live rock. I guess I don't understand what the premise of the product is, but I certainly endorse the use of cultured live rock, which it sounds like it basically is. considering that this particular rock renews itself constantly (just saw something on the huge amount of lava produce a year on the Discovery Channel) it sounds good.

You know dave, I thought I had heard that it was illegal to remove rocks from hawaii because of the destruction of their reefs. I think the base is aquacultured.
