I've been looking at this neat crab for awhile for my tank and am wondering about getting a couple for my reef...anyone have any experiences with them, possibly some pro's and con's?
thanks a lot!

Ive had a few when i was in hawaii. They are cool looking crabs and will eat algea. I was also able to get them to spawn and when they released the babys my fish went crazy over them. Have to be careful with ground dwelling fish like gobies, mandarins, blennies and such because i have seen then try and pick at them. These crabs are pretty slow though so i wouldnt worry to much about your other fish.

I bought one about 3 weeks ago, haven't seen him since! lol
I have even looked at night, again haven't seen him. I have a lot of LR, so who know where he is hiding

Are the strawberry crabs you are talking about look like emerald crabs? My buddy had a crab like that and he had a problem with them snipping at his zoos. I had the same trouble with an emerald crab.

imo all crabs are no good for a reef emerald crabs knock over stuff pick and eat coraline and the crabs with sharp claws are killers thats just my 2 cents with crabs have a few and not very happy with them..

liverock...yes, they are similar in appearance to the emeralds, except a bit larger.
I never had problems with emeralds nipping at my polyps or zoos.
I think if you have enough crap for them to eat, they leave things alone. I probably overfeed everything in my once a day feeding, but the benefits are all of my little guys (dozens of assorted small hermits, 2 LARGE hermits, 3 emeralds, 1 strawberry i havent seen in a while etc)always have food.

Ive never had problems with crabs picking at coralline but my urchins eat which is a good thing because it will help spread your coralline when they poop it out.

Thanks cygretzky9, for iding the crab. The crabs are great looking and I guess if you over feed like was said then don't worry about anything else in your tank.

well imo over feeding isnt the best thing to do as it makes are asking for a nice spike in nitrites feeding every day isnt the best for reef tanks i feed my tank every other day fish and corlas can go days with out being feed...Fish waste and food waste is the killer in all reef tanks!!!

I kinda like the way I feed my tank. I feed atleast 7 times a day. I feed them a different variety each time, some crushed flakes, next time some cyclop-eeze then mysis and later some prime reef. I feed very little everytime that way the fish are constantly eating and pooping. Fish waste is 90% undigested so it will be eatin by other animals such as hermits snails and even your corals. Plus in the ocean they are constanly eatin so I want to keep it as natural as I can. Ive been doing this for a long time and have never seen any spikes in my water. Your fish and critters will be well fed and your water wont be messed up...well thats IME

Sweetreef,
I don't mean I overfeed to that point silly, but I do put in enough that some falls to the bottom. It also depends on your maint sched...I do at least bi-weekly water changes, and keep very close tabs on my testing..in anothe rpost I said I test every 3 days for trates, trites, amm etc...I wouldnt suggest people overfeed who don't want to keep up with the work involved in doing this.
I know they can go for a couple of days, but I enjoy watching everything "run" to feed...the hermits get all crazy and everything comes out from hiding (except that damn strawberry crab!)
And viet-7 times a day? Is it really small amounts?
For feeding, I use half cube of frozen algae, half of brine shrimp plus, and some flake.

As long as your fish and inverts are happy keep doing what your doing. Im just relating my experience that may give you ideas on different ways to feed. 7 times is minimal for me. I feed very little and when I say very little I do mean very small amounts. Maybe 3-4 crushed flakes then the next time i feed i give a small scoop of cyclop-eeze, the scoop i have is about the size of a nail head and i dont give full scoops of it. Then when i feed mysis I dont even use 1/4 of the cube. Each time i feed then I alternate between the foods making sure they get somewhat of a good variety.
