Hd movies?

So we're getting a HD big screen tv...do you have to have a HD dvd player as well or how does that all work? And is it really worth it to spend double on the DVDs? I was thinking of getting a blue ray player because of course I LOVE to see it in the stores, but not sure if its really that great or not....any input or recommendations on players for someone on a budget(couple hundred max)?

Not even close man.
Sounds is better, picture quality is a seller man.. Seems like u can see the set sometimes it so good. Other features u get with the DVDs are good
Def worth it a good HD TV and some sweet surround sound.
only kinda moveis I buy on Blu Ray are ACTION, HORROR, Thriller, And stuff like Blue-Planet is sweet.
No need to buy a Comedy movie on Blu Ray IMO

HD is gone Obsolete... nada squashed by the blue ray / HD format war about 8 months ago.
Also... just my 2 cents... I agree with all of the above... and to add, I would look into getting an up scale DVD player... they are not expensive and what they do is take all your existing dvd's and enhance them to HD when you play them. No they are not as good as blue ray or true hd but they are a heck of a lot better than watching them on a std dvd player especially on a new HD TV. JMO..

just buy a PS3 it plays everything. dvd, bluray, cd's, you cant pt ur digital pics on it, ur mp3 music, oh and you can play video games if ur into that

Whatever you do make sure you hook up the Blueray with the right cables, HDMI, or else you'll be watching it standard def and not even knowing it...

Any decent blue ray player is at least $299 and up... For 399 you get the player a multitude of available media type readers and a kick...*** gaming system. Totally worth the $$ JMO...

I don't think it is a gimmick they are really high quality stuff, however you aren't going to notice it...

High quality garbage...I HAD a monster HDMI cable(yes I fell for the sales pitch at first), and compared to the one from walmart or the free one from directv there is NO difference whatsoever. Just giving the OP a heads up, when the salesman tries to force feed a monster cable down his throat.. If he wants to pay $100+ for a cable he can get for $20, that is his business.

Definitely pass on monster cables. There are cables that are just as good for a 3rd of the price.
I also had a microcenter employee tell me they only had to pay $8 for a monster HDMI cable after their discount. Just goes to show you, that you are just paying for the brand.

Agreed. Talk to anyone into home/car audio/theater, they will tell you interconnects are worth their weight in gold (literally as some of them are gold). However for the standard 6' cord most people need, it's totoally unnecessary. When you have a HD projector, and have to run 40' of HDMI, the good cables are worth every penny.

Did you not read what i read, you aren't going to notice. They really are good cables. Well made, well designed, they use high quality materials. Just the standard user isn't going to notice a difference. Are they worth 100 bucks. Not for most uses. But every cable has a HUGE markup on it. Those have an even bigger one.
There has to be a reason why most touring performance artists use monster cables.

Coming from someone who used to work in the industry, I am going to have to agree with stdreb27 Monster Cable does make a far superior product, but it can very easily go un-noticed. You pay alot for it to look jus a tiny bit better. Unless you have the highest end componets the regular HDMI cable should work.
As for upconversion DVD players...its all a bunch or hype. Yes technically it will display 720/1080 lines as opposed to the regular 480 but with out getting real technical it doesn't do much as far as an end result.
If you are in the market for a good cheap Blu-ray look at last years panasonic. It is a great player (much faster load times than last years Sony) and I saw it on Amazon for $250. Last year at this time is was going for $500. Hope this helps

Sears and Kmart are going to have sales on blu ray players on Black Friday, SonyBD350 for $180, go buy it then. And Monster cables are crap, it's kinda like Bose stuff, way overpriced for what you are getting, regular cables will do fine.
