He didn't make it!

I tried to save my grouper that had ick. I did a 50% water change and I took out most of my cc to see if that would reduce my nitrite problem. Anyway, the grouper didn't make the transition. Tell me what I did wrong.

First, I took my grouper out the tank and put him in a 3gal bucket until I finished. I then tried to give the grouper a f/w dip. Which I thought was sucssesful. Then I put him in the bucket with the puffer. He then started to go crazy, I didn't know what to do. So I panicked and put him back into the display tank with 50% water. Needless to say he's gone I'm now ready to put the puffer back into the tank, I'm letting the salt settle first.
Help, Help me please!

Why did you take the fish out to do a water change? If you are doing water changes, the water should be pre-mixed at least 24 hours in advance, not directly in the tank. Newly created saltwater is very caustic and will kill your fish. This is probably what killed your grouper.
