Mine have done this before, I think it is usually a sign of stress. It should grow back, you will probably start to see new feathers in a week or so, maybe a little longer.

Black? My tubes have never turned black. What are your water parameters and how long have you had the duster?

The worm itself may be black, you may be seeing a worm without a tube? Check your calcium levels as this is used by the worm to build its happy home. They will sometimes toss their crown for various reasons, I've had them before and they have all done this. It takes a little time but it will come back.

All of mine that have thrown their crowns have grown them back. The ones that have jumped out of their tubes altogether, that's a different story. Most of them get eaten before they can build a new tube and grow new feathers.

o yeh i guess mine was the worm and all maybe...but it looked like only like 1/4 of an inch or so...are the worms very small or was this just part of the crown?
