helious lighting

Let me start from the begining and tell me if its me or a bad product. I was looking for lighting for my soon to be 75 gal. reef tank. I went to a local fish store and found a helious (im pretty sure thats how its spelled the units is at my in-laws) lighting system. It was very eye appealing and within the price range I was looking for. I took it home and at the time my tank was not set-up. I turned it on a few times to show a few friends and one half of the fixture stopped working!:( So I took it back and they gave me a new ballast. I went back a couple of weeks later and the store owner talked to the guy that she gets them from and he said plug it into a surge protector. That on the west coast (I live in cleveland ohio) they are having some problems with them with the surges. So ok I can buy that. So I finally get my 75 up on the 7th of this month and the 22nd the same thing happens half of the light stops working:mad: So I took it back and I was very upset and they are cool at the lfs because it is family owned and there like calm down but I have no lights on my tank! So they call the guy AGAIN and he asked if I used a surge protector and I said yes. Then he asked if I had breakers or fuses, I said breakers (shouldnt make a differance), Then he asked how old my house was I told him 50 years old. He is trying to blame it on my elec. But I get the same elec. that everyone else does. When the first one blew it was on a g.f.i. but no surge. The second time I had a surge. They gave me a third ballast to use but I gave it to my father in law because his house is pretty new and I want to rule out that its my house. He has only had it two days now. So I told them I want to return it and buy a different system. So has anyone else ever head of them or use them or any info is good and what other systems are out there that are good for power compacts.
thanks for listening this has been driving my nuts!:(

I've seen good luck with many folks using JBL lighting. These seem to be rigerous PC lighting systems with a great deal of options available. I have been looking around at them a bit as well and this is the feedback I have been getting. Good luck!

I have a 48" helios PC. The 48 is set up so that you can run either half or all bulbs at once. Therefore there are two ballasts in the power unit for the fixture. One of my ballasts went bad after a month, but since the other was working, I simply waited until the replacement came to swap it out. The new one seems to be working fine. I'm sure its just crappy workmanship, since mine was plugged into a fused surge protector, and my building is BRAND NEW.
If the ballast goes out again, I will probably just wire a new ballast to the system, and keep the fixture itself. I still LOVE the way it looks.

if you are using a gfci and a decent surge protecter then your current shouldn't fluctuate any more than someone with newer wiring--i think they are feeding you a line

The first ballast was on a g.f.c.i. the second was just on a protector but still that should do it! I got a checker for my outlets and it tells me everything is ok. So I think they are just giving me a line and like the previous post said same thing happened and he has a new building! Bad product!
