Been doing some studing here. I have learned a great deal on here so far, plan on reading more so I am bound to learn a lot more. Just wanted to say Hi. The wife and I just moved cross country. From Maryland to Texas. I bought my mom a 55g tank a couple of years ago for christmas. She got tired of cleaning it and gave it to me. I set it up about a month ago with just fresh water in it and nothing else, with unpacking the house and my wifes honey do's haven't had much time for anything else. Well about a week or two ago the filter finally died. The water started to get alittle murky so it was time to get off the pot and start setting it up. Bought a canister filter, sand, and some LS. Put in the sand and added the salt waited about a day and a half and added the LS. A couple of days later I bought a test kit. Tested the ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The ammonia and nitrite was 0 and the nitrate I would say about an 8 according to the color chart. Is it possible that the 3 or so weeks that I was just filtering the water it went thru the cycle and I just missed it? I plan on waiting about another week and adding some LR and then about another week put in some fish. As you can see I'm not in a big rush. Thanks for all the help everyone on here has been putting out. And thanks ahead of time for all the help, with all the questions I will be asking.

If you were just running it with freshwater, there is no way it cycled. Freshwater biological bacteria is different from saltwater biological bacteria. They cannot live in the other's enviroment.
I would recommend getting about 55-60 lbs. of rock, cycling your tank, and waiting about 6 weeks to get fish. Any sooner, and you will probably not have any fish live in there.
