I have a quarter sized hippo tang who is tearing himself apart! He's been scratching since sunday and I've been using garlic as a precaution. There is no visible white spots on him but he is scratching himself up really bad. His face is all trashed and his stomach has these red spots on it where i think he gashed himself from scratching. Now the coral beauty and the atlantic blue tang are scratching too. Today I started treating the tank w/ RX-P and also I gave each fish a dip today in rx-p. Tank parameters are fine (70 gallon f/o), I have no liverock or livesand. This hippo was added saturday. What do I do? Please can anyone help me? I really don't want to lose these fish.

Well the hippo finally gave in this morning after such a long fight. As for the other tang and the coral beauty, they seem fine. I will finish this one week treatment of freshwater dips, continue hyposalinity, and continue the treatment with rx-p.

um Aquarius I don't take EVERYTHING that peops say be they sharks or others all of the time; but being TERRY suggested that you discontinue usage of RX p; I'd heed that advice, usually shark level peops have plenty of experience first hand; the more varying treatments you perform may only farther cause injury and stress

I felt as though I had to finish the cycle with rx-p and as a result, everyone is fine. NO scratching in 2 whole days and eating fine.

Your tank is probably suffing from ich or velvet. Your tang probably has lateral line disease (to improve its conditions, increase nutritious food + add vitamins to the food). <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" />
I recommend having your other fish treated with the hyposalinity method in another hospital tank. :)
Also, add some live rock&sand to help with the bioload :p
