we went on a four day vacation, left the tank in the care of some friends. I had just bought a cowfish for my boyfriend for his birthday Oct 7th. The little guy was solid, eating well, happy, healthy, no troubles other than he swims like a shoebox! LOL. When we got home, my boyfriend said he disappeared. :( IDK what to think. If he's still in there wil he poison his tankmates?

Hi, welcome to the site!

In a well cycled tank with plenty of CUC (clean up crew of narssarius snails, bristle worms and serpent or brittle stars) the tank will have no problems, cleaning up the dead and the wasted food are their jobs. In a newer set-up, it could create a problem. Get those ammonia test strips (this is the only type of strip to use, all other tests need to be lab type) Any ammonia reading at all, do a water change. Use the strip to test each day for a week, if after a week no ammonia spike, you're good.
