Help getting back into the hobby?

Hi everyone!
I need a little bit of help trying to decide on getting back into the tank addiction... Here are the two EMPTY (can you believe it, two EMPTY tanks?) I have....
125 gallon - was a salt tank
55 gallon - was a fw
Both have sump systems that have the overflow box that runs down to the wet/dry housed in a 10 gallon sump.
Here is the way I see things right now... I can either convert the 55 gallon to a salt or setup the 125 gallon salt again.
The things I know I need are new substrate because I was NOT a fan of the crushed coral I had in there...
In addition, I had actually been considering a canister filter (ready for my hands to be slapped after posting that), but, the only reason is because when I went on a vacation, my overflow lost it's prime due to a power failure the day before I came home and I lost a HUGE chunk of fish (the petsitter tried for 4 hours to reprime and finally called my local fish store and the owner drove over an hour and tried to save them - finally got it to re-prime)... A big reason that I got out of the hobby since I was going to have to start to travel for work for about a year and could NOT deal with that heartache all over again...
So, here are a few questions I have:
1. Are there any options that would help keep an overflow primed to keep the above situation from happening again?
2. Any concerns or issues in converting a tank from a fw to a sw?
3. Any issues in setting a tank back up for the first time after being empty for about 2 years?
I'd love any advice and/or recommendations!
Thanks!

Hello Brani, and welcome,
I use two canister filters, I can alternate cleaning so I don't loose good bacteria.
125g for a saltwater sounds great, I like big. At least with a canister filter a power outage wont stop it from restarting.
Good luck, and keep us posted!

i would for sure set up the 125. in either case, use white vinegar to wipe out the old tanks. i prefer a sand substrate. i personally use aragonite sand. also, have you thought about drilling the tank? i've heard it's easy, there are a bunch of people here that have done it and once the weather gets nice around here i plan on doing mine so i dont have to worry about losing siphon.

also, i would use the 55 as a sump for the 125.
