What a wonderful hobby!
Sometime in the night a hose sprang a pin-point leak and I wound up with about (near as I can guess) 35 gallons of water all over my floor, spreading into my bedroom, etc.
But that's not the worst news. The lower water level in my sump caused my main pump (a Mag 2400) to seize up from running without water. My LFS doesn't have anything near that big in stock (they're not open yet but I know from past experience) so near as I can figure my options are:
1. Fix the old pump (I don't know if this is possible).
2. Drive out of state to get a pump from a larger store (I'd have to call around).
3. Go to Lowes and see if they have a similar pump that can handle the salt water and the flow rate.
4. Order a replacement pump online and race the shipping (? maybe 48 hours?). I have 3 large Vortex and 3 Koralia PHs in the tank to keep the flow rate up.
If it matters in your answer,
My DT is a 450 and the peripheral sumps etc. bring the system total up to around 625-650 gallons.
Bioload-wise I have 9 large (4-7") Tangs of various species, a 3" Copperband, a 3" Clarkii, lots of inverts, about 26-30 softies and 4 SPSs.

I called Lowes and they've got a pond pump with a 2500 GPH flow rate for $69. Is the MAJOR ($69 vs. $179 for the Mag Drive) price difference simply due to marketing? General purpose vs. hobby specific.

the major difference in the case of the pumps in this case would be metal parts. your better of spending the money in this case. often it is only marketing but when it comes to pumps corrosion is a mother and corrosion immune pumps are more expensive.

So the plan is:
1. Go to Lowes and buy the pond pump to get my system going.
2. Order the replacement MagDrive
3. Keep the pond pump as a back-up.
OR
can I wait the 48 hrs. for them to ship me a new pump?

It might be possible to keep everything going for 48hrs, but the question is, Is it really worth it to try it with all the money you have in the tank for a $69 pump? I'd just go get the pump from lowes and order a new mag online(wouldnt even need to pay for crazy overnight shipping this way either, and you get a backup pump out of the deal), but thats just me, and I have no idea what your whole situation is, how its plumbed or anything like that.

Yeah, I'd pretty much decided that a trip to Lowes is in the works but since you guys added the idea of garden centers into my mental mix I started calling nurseries and found a garden center 5.3 miles from my home that has 4 Danner MagDrive 24s in stock.
Duh!
Now I just have to replace the skimmer hose (I think I'll forget new hose and go to 1" PVC instead).
Thanks very much!
