A few people read this and suggested a few places to post. I hope it's ok that I posted here!
Hi! My name is Grace Darnell, and I am a senior at Downingtown East High School. Before any student is permitted to graduate, they must complete a graduation project. It took me a good deal of time to figure out what I wanted to do, because I wanted to combine my possible major of marine biology, the love of my school, and leave something behind for the students to come. My biology teacher and I brainstormed for months before deciding on the perfect project. I will set up a salt water aquarium in our schools biotech lab, and give step by step instructions on how I do it. I will also teach about the science and chemistry involved in this hobby, and, most importantly, about the conservation and preservation of our oceanic reefs. I believe it is very important for students to know how delicate it is to establish such a tank, and the time, effort, and patience that goes into creating one, hopefully teaching about how difficult it will be to get our reefs back once they have been destroyed. I hope to save just a few more reefs from destruction through this project.
In order to complete this project, I must have 40 hours of work put into this entire process. I do plan to go above and beyond that in the care and teaching of this tank, but these hours will be spent doing a few things. My hours will include but are not limited to, researching the aquarium, setting the tank and filtration system up, finding wonderful public speakers and marine activists, attending local reef keeping meetings, and, most importantly, finding wonderful companies and donors that feel as passionately about saving the reefs as I do.
My school has generously donated a 70 gallon partially reef ready tank for my use. Now we are asking for your help to further our education. We need a lot to get our project started! I have donated sand from my home aquarium, but that’s about all we have.
We are looking for a few donations from you! We need salt, and tons of it! In addition to that, we need a lighting fixture for the 70 gallon, a few power heads, a protein skimmer, water pump, and tons of live rock!
If you have any interest in donating, either cash or materials we need to help further our education and teach about the safety and importance of our reefs, please contact me at ghdarnell@hotmail.com. I am more than willing to answer ANY questions or concerns you may have.
Thank you for your support!
