Hi,
Corals get all upset when they get moved around, sometimes it takes them a week to feel safe and open up.
The less you handle them the better. I never glued my corals down until I was sure they were happy in the spot I placed them. It sounds like the only thing you are doing wrong is getting impatient.
There is more to consider then the light and water flow when selecting corals. Corals can't handle nitrates and phosphates, they need to be placed in the right area of the tank, down stream of other aggressive corals...it's kind of like driving a car, you are thinking of many things at once, and it seems hard at first, then it becomes second nature.
This book is really helpful.
