5 days ago I purchased a lovely piece of Elephants ear coral(Sarcophyton trocheliophorum), it was in great condition, showing no marks or pale patches. Everything was fine for 2 days - all polyps were extended and it looked great. Suddenly (within 1 day) all the polyps retracted and I noticed small cream coloured spots on the top of the coral. The coral has not extended any of its polyps for 2 days.
The spots are spreading quickly. On the top of the coral they are about the size of a pinhead, they are increasing in number and starting to join up, down the stem they are forming larger patches. The spots are not part of the actual coral, they look like small scabs and easily lift off. Two things spring to mind when I look at it. The first is that calcium is precipitating on the coral or secondly that the coral is reacting to something and excreting this substance!
All other corals and fish in the tank are fine and nothing else seems to show this condition.
The water conditions are all very good, the only thing that I have not tested is the ppm calcium. I have added very little since I started the tank and do not think the levels are too high.
Has anyone got any ideas as to what this is?
