Hi,
Everytime I change my water my water starts to turn green 5 days later. Theirs noting but some live rocks, and a clownfish. I have blocked most of the sunlight that has the potential to shine on my tank. I have got my water tested and it seems to be fine. I just dont get it. Could some please give me an explanation or solution. My gravel rocks get dirty fast too? Could it be the live rock? Turbo snails? Please help.
Thanks,
Robert

I agree Robert. Tap water will do it everytime. I asked about the live plants because if they sexual they can turn water green.

This last water changed i started using distilled water and it looks like its starting to slowly turn green again. Any other suggestions on what is happening? Sunlight?
Thanks

have you used tap water or well water in the past? If yes, then it'll take a few water changes to get all the tap water out.
what are your levels? how high are your nitrates? how long are your lights on for? do you have clean up crew? anything that will eat algea? what kind of filter do you have?
Since you said you covered up the sources of sunlight, I'll say no to that. in direct sunlight shouldn't do it (it never has for me.)

Could it be the invert food im feeding the clownfish? I did a full water change with distilled wter. I haven't tasted anything yet since I just fully changed the water. I'll do that tommorow. My lights are on from 10am-10pm. I have the backpack filter. Do you think the filter might be my problem? Thanks for your reponses everyone I sure need them.

Maybe cut down on your lights? That's 12hrs of lighting, lower it to 10hrs instead. I had that green algae problem until I lower the amount of time the lights are on. Plus I got my protein skimmer going, now the water is crystal clear. My snails are eating all that algae off the back glass. You should check on your nitrate too!!! It tend to make your algae grow like crazy. If so, cut down on your feeding....Good Luck! :happyfish

I had this same problem when I topped off with well water not too long ago...I tried clearing it up by doing water changes using DI water but it would just turn back green again. So I went and got a UV Sterilizer and my water was as clear as it has ever been in like two days.

The most common causes of algae blooms is phosphates, too much lighting, nitrates, inadequate water flow, and DOC (dissolved organic compounds). Definately do not add tap water to your tank ever.

you did a 100% water change? :scared: Test your water NOW! Keep an eye on those fish/inverts and watch for amm.

my thoughts exactly.....
by the way i think everyone is confusing actual algae with "algae colored water" he mentioned green water not green stuff growing.. I have heard this recently with someone else. they were in hyposalinity, but they were using a non cycled tank.. which tells me one of two things
a.) he did a 100% water change and his tank isnt cycled
b.) he has added too many buffers, conditioners, and chemicals, and is not an established tank, and also may not have a skimmer.....
another thing are you vacuuming the substrate? are you moving the substrate around?your tank could have crashed....

My water tested fine. I have the backpack filter system with a protein skimmer and filter. Shoudl I clean it? What are the necessary steps for my tank to be cycled? All I have been adding in my tank is the stabilizer daily. What is needed to stop this? UV Sterilizer?

what the heck is a stablizer? You shouldn't be adding anything to your tank that you can't test for.
100% water change is a bad idea. what do you mean by water tested fine. Give us levels. You'll have to keep an eye on it. You just put 100% new water, that water isn't cycled. How much lr do you have? Test for amm again. Keep an eye on it. You may luck out....

I give up, I'm not going to help those who don't take the time to learn anything.

to cycle a tank you add shrimp/uncured lr/fish/fish food, ect. this breaks downs, you get amm, you then get nitrites, you then get nitrates, when amm and nitrites are zero you do a water change (like 25% at most), then you test again. When nitrates are under 20, you start to stock your tank. amm kills/hurt/makes fish suffer.
