Me and my wife are in the process of setting up our tank. Today she went to our lfs and came back with some more ls, lr, and lighting. The lighting is corallife aqualight. It has 2 65 watt 10k daylight and 2 65 watt true actinic 03 blue straight compact fluorescent lamps. These cost me 350 which I dont know is a good price. My whole question is this good for our 55 gal/ We want hard corals and anemones. Should i just bring these back and get MH? Also if these are good about how long should I leave each light on since it has two? Any advice is greatly appericated

if it were me, i would bring them back and check out lighting web sites like hello lights dot com or specialty lights dot com and maybe do a retro kit.
The kits are simple to set up and YOU the user have more say in where the lights go in the hood and adding t-5 act3 lights and moon lights.
The lights you bought are limited to mainly fish with some low light coral. Every one starts off saying maybe a few coral, eventually the addiction gets bad and your a full blown junky.
Stopping by the LFS scratching like a crack head trying to get a fix
.
Welcome to the addiction known as saltwater

Could anyone give me some suggestions on which MH lights to get? I am looking on hello lights and i see 250W HL MH Retrokfit Kit (Single Ended) and 250W (M58/H37) Metal Halide Retrofit Kit ~Probe Start which is better do I need two or just one? I see these are a lot cheaper then the ones I bought do I need to buy the blue fluorescent to? or is the 48" 6 Lamp Tek Light T5- Sunlight Supply with 4 54 watt 11k and two 54 watt pure actinic enough our should i go with 3 and 3 what is the difference between the actinic and the regular 54 watt 11k ones?

What size is your tank? On average you need 1 Mh light for every 2 feet of tank. I.e. If your tank is a 55 gallon standard, that would be 48 inches long equaling 2 mh lights. Get it?
The old way of measuring lights needed is “watts per gallon“. Watts per gallon is any where from 4-7 watts per gallon.
(YES its an old way to measure, but a good way to get your feet wet with the lights needed, Us older members know its old, knock it off and stop trying to intimidate new people. )
As a new member to this hobby watts per gallon is a “rule of thumb” for you to use.
If I get into explaining the par rating and k rating and everything else to figure out how many watts you need you run away. Stick to watts per gallon for now and read up on the lighting later on when your bored.
The single ended bulbs don’t need a uv glass shield other then to protect from water splashing.
The D.E have no uv blocker and need a glass shield. I use both and noticed (on my tanks) I get a better spread with the single end/ mogul bulb.
I like the added color of the act 3 lights and moon lights all custom built into my hoods.
I have used the coralife pro lights before. They have since been retired to the frag tank down stairs.

I'm personally having a similar discussion with others; whether 216 watts of T-5 is better than 260 watts of PC for a 55 gallon that will house soft and LPS corals. I've gotten several different responses, if anyone here has an opinion I'd be happy to hear it and hopefully it will help here as well. :joy:
