Don't have to have then unless there are dead spots (places in LR where the water isn't getting circulated). They are a good idea to have though.

I would suggest maybe putting one in to not only improve the flow of the tank but to help the oxygen exchange. I have two in my tank one across the top of the water and one on the bottom of the tank. Not only does this help the flow of the tank but in can also help the coraline (good) algea to grow. I have noticed an increase in mine since adding the second powerhead across the bottom. They aren't a necessity but sure do help the tank along a lot more! Good Luck!
